Student Positions

The Brant Historical Society has been connecting youth with the job market for several decades assisting with building their skill sets as part of the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS).

Two federal government grants support these positions through Young Canada Works and Canada Summer Jobs.

Young Canada Works

Young Canada Works (YCW) in Heritage Organizations (YCWHO) is an employment program for students. It offers them the opportunity to improve their skills while acquiring practical knowledge in the heritage field. Full time positions last from 6-16 weeks. Students may work full time or part time.

A student may be eligible for employment if they:

  • are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible);
  • are legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
  • are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
  • will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) during the Young Canada Works (YCW) work assignment;
  • have been a full-time high school, college, CEGEP or university student (as defined by their educational institution) in the semester preceding the YCW work assignment; and
  • intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW work assignment.

Research Assistant – Walking Tours & Online Exhibits

Number of Positions: 2
Length of Placement: June 1 to August 22, 2026 (12 weeks)
Hourly wage: $17.60

Job Objectives:

  • Support public education programming at the Brant Historical Society by delivering walking tours during the summer schedule.
  • Research themes or areas for new walking tours and online exhibit content, specifically utilizing local history resources (research library, archival materials, microfilm, etc.)
  • Planning walking tour routes and content for 3 walking tours (1 – 1.5hr in length each)
  • Greet guests and provide tours of the museum.
  • Other duties as assigned

Candidate Profile:

The ideal candidate will have an interest in heritage and be working towards a degree in history, information & library sciences, museum studies, or digital media. In addition, the ideal candidate will:

  • Work well with a variety of people with different abilities and age groups;
  • Has knowledge of archival collections and retrieval of information using logical and database query statements;
  • Has experience conducting extensive research projects by pulling information from multiple resources;
  • Have good written and verbal communication skills;
  • Be able to read hand-written (cursive) documents;
  • Be able to work with the Microsoft Office Suite of products.

Canada Summer Jobs

Canada Summer Jobs is a program under the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy, which aims to provide flexible and holistic services to help all young Canadians develop the skills and gain paid work experience to successfully transition into the labour market.

Canada Summer Jobs is provided through Employment and Skills Development Canada. Youth must meet the following requirements:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

Museum Cataloguer

Number of Positions: 1
Length of Placement: May 12 – July 4th, 2026
Hourly Wage: $17.60

Tasks and Responsibilities – The Museum Cataloguer will be responsible for entering recent artifact donations into our digital cataloguing software, PastPerfect. The cataloguer will match artifacts to their “Deed of Gift” forms, photograph or scan the artifact, enter the data into PastPerfect, and properly pack the item away for storage. The main responsibilities would include:

a. Creating an inventory/ list of recently donated artifacts;
b. Adding new records into the PastPerfect database;
c. Taking photos of recently donated objects in accordance with museum standards, and editing the photos (if needed);
d. Attaching images into PastPerfect Database;
e. Other duties as assigned.

Museum Educator – Summer Camp

Number of Positions: 1
Length of Placement: July 6 – September 4, 2026
Hourly Wage: $17.60

Tasks and Responsibilities – The Museum Educator will assist with our 8 weeks of summer camp and help to plan activities, games, and crafts for 6 weeks of the total 8 that provides a balance of history and new ideas that engage youth. The main responsibilities of this job include:

a. Work with the Education Program Coordinator and other staff to create activities that allow children to engage with history and the farming history of the site;
b. Assist with supervision of drop off, pick up, and over care of children ages 4-11;
c. Create a safe and fun environment for children and communicate with parents on the activities of the day;
d. Help create media content that can be shown on the organization’s website and various social media platforms;
e. A successful vulnerable sector police check; and,
f. Other duties as assigned.

Tasks and Responsibilities – Acting in a middle supervisory role, the Education Outreach Program Coordinator will oversee our 8 weeks of summer camp. They will work with the Education Program Coordinator and Museum Educator to plan activities, games, and crafts for 6 weeks of the total 8 that provides a balance of history and new ideas that engage youth. The main responsibilities of this job include:

a. Work with the Education Program Coordinator and other staff to create activities that allow children to engage with history and the farming history of the site;
