“Women’s Suffrage: An Ontario Perspective” – Tarah Brookfield, Professor

Wednesday, October 25, 2017; 7:00 PM – Myrtleville House Museum

2017 marks the 100th anniversary of women being granted voting rights in the Province of Ontario. Drawing upon examples from Brantford, Brant County, and Six Nations of the Grand River, Professor Tarah Brookfield (Wilfrid Laurier University) will discuss the challenges suffragists faced in their forty-year battle to convince politicians, the press, and the public that women deserved to vote.  In addition to showcasing  the stories and ideas of suffrage leaders, Brookfield will share the experiences women voters had going to the polls for the first time,  the role played by the First World War, and how gender, race, and class prejudices entwined to inform and limit democratic principles in Ontario.
